Welcome!

Thank you for your interest in Brazos Valley Communicators, the only organization in the Brazos Valley dedicated to training up young homeschool men and women as Christ's communicators.

Did you know that the number one fear in America is public speaking?  Some maintain that it poses an even greater fear than death.  A common saying confirms that "most people would rather be the person in the coffin than the one giving the eulogy."  Because of this, many people believe that speech and debate is something to fear.

However, BVC contends that the reason most people are so afraid of public speaking is that they have not linked the activity of speaking in front of people to everyday life.  As soon as the link is made, the fear begins to dissipate.

The ability to communicate ideas effectively is one that is necessary for everyone.  Even someone working the graveyard shift at a McDonalds must have the ability to communicate with co-workers and customers effectively in order to do the best job possible.  Many people don't realize the importance of communication until it's too late.

Another common objection to speech and debate training comes from parents: "Why would I want to pay money to teach my child to ARGUE with me?"  But speech and debate is more than just simple arguing.  Speech and debate compels the student to carefully research and frame arguments that are convincing because they are based on truth.  This is very different than arguing for the sake of mere disagreement or in the heat of the moment. The competition aspect of speech and debate sharpens listening and speaking skills under the pressure of the moment and turns arguing into an extracurricular activity like no other.

Speech and debate supports and builds on logical and verbal skills across the curriculum.  It can have a positive effect on:

  • Mathematics
  • English/Language Arts
  • Writing
  • Speech
  • Logic
  • Science
  • Social sciences
  • Foreign Language

Finally, speech and debate develops skills such as professionalism, networking, presence, and research, all of which strengthen a student’s future academic and professional life.
